《Adam Bede》Adam Bede, the first novel written by George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Ann Evans), was published in 1859. Adam Bede carried its readers back sixty years to the lush countryside of Eliot's native Warwickshire, and a time of impending change for England and the wider world. The novel is a discussion of class and education and also of religion and love. Pretty Hetty Sorrel is loved by the village carpenter Adam Bede, but her head is turned by the attentions of the fickle young squire, Arthur Donnithorne. Betrayed by their innocence, vanity, and imprudence, their foolish hearts lead them to a tragic triangle of seduction, murder, and retribution. Faith, in the figure of Methodist preacher Dinah Morris, offers redemption to all who are willing to embrace it. Eliot's powerful portrayal of the interaction of ordinary people brought a new social realism to the novel, in which humour and tragedy co-exist, and fellow-feeling is the mainstay of human relationships
.《Brother Jacob 雅各布哥哥(英文版)》Brother Jacob is a short story by English writer George Eliot. It was first published in 1860. “Brother Jacob” describes the selfishness and conceit common to mankind. In Brother Jacob, George Eliot explores the relationship between the self-centered, ambitious David Faux and his slow-witted brother, Jacob. David Faux imagines that the greatest profession in the world must be that of the confectioner, but when reality fails to lives up to the promise, he decides to change course and seek his fortune overseas. To get there he'll have to bilk Jacob out of his rightful inheritance. Brother Jacob is Eliot's literary homage to Thackeray, a satirical modern fable that draws telling parallels between eating and reading. Revealing Eliot's deep engagement with the question of whether there are 'necessary truths' independent of our perception of them and the boundaries of art and the self.《Romola 》Romola is a novel set in 15th-century Florence by George Eliot. The story takes place amidst actual historical events during the Italian Renaissance. When Christopher Columbus has sailed towards the New World, a Florentine trader meets a shipwrecked stranger, who introduces himself as Tito Melema, a young Italianate-Greek scholar. Tito becomes acquainted with two young girls, Tessa and Romola. As Tito becomes settled in Florence, assisting Bardo with classical studies, he falls in love with Romola. However, Tessa falls in love with Tito, and the two are "married" in a mock ceremony. Later, Romola is taken by a boat to a small village affected by the Plague, and she helps the survivors. Romola's experience gives her a new purpose in life and she returns to Florence. Romola takes care of Tessa and her two children, with the help of her older cousin. The story ends with Romola imparting advice to Tessa's son, based on her own experiences and the influences in her life. Originally serialized in Cornhill Magazine from 1862 to 1863, the first book edition was published in 3 volumes in 1863. It is "a deep study of life in the city of Florence from an intellectual, artistic, religious, and social point of view".
