Vanity Fair is an English novel by William Makepeace Thackeray which follows the lives of Becky Sharp and Emmy Sedley amid their friends and families during and after the Napoleonic Wars. The book's title comes from John Bunyan's allegorical story The Pilgrim's Progress, first published in 1678 and still widely read at the time of Thackeray's novel. Vanity fair refers to a stop along the pilgrim's progress: a never-ending fair held in a town called Vanity, which is meant to represent man's sinful attachment to worldly things. The novel narrates the struggle of people to gain money and the part it plays in determining the pattern of their lives. Thackeray introduces us to two heroines and it is through them and their various ordeals that he satirizes the materialism and shallowness of society. The novel satirises whole swaths of humanity while retaining a light touch. It also features Thackeray's most memorable character, the engagingly roguish Becky Sharp. The novel is now considered a classic, and has inspired several film adaptations.
