No Name is a novel by Wilkie Collins, first published in 1862. Illegitimacy is a major theme of the novel. It was originally serialised in Charles Dickens' magazine All the Year Round before book publication. The story begins in 1846, at Combe-Raven in West Somerset, the country residence of the happy Vanstone family. Norah and Magdalen Vanstone have an idyllic life. With loving parents, a caring governess, and an expansive estate to roam, the girls desire nothing else. But when a tragic accident claims the life of their father, and their mother dies shortly thereafter. And it is quickly revealed that the two were born out of wedlock. This illegitimacy in the eyes of the English court deprives them of their inheritance, a turn of events which Norah resigns to gracefully, but headstrong Magdelen is unable to accept. No Name is both tragedy and comedy, and demonstrates the skill of a writer at the peak of his craft. Condemned by Victorian critics as immoral, but regarded today as a novel of outstanding social insight, No Name shows William Wilkie Collins as the height of his literary powers.
