Juvenilia Volume III is a work by Jane Austen, one of the most famous and beloved writers in English literature. Perhaps as early as 1787, Austen began to write poems, stories, and plays for her own and her family's amusement. Austen later compiled "fair copies" these early works into three bound notebooks, now referred to as the "Juvenilia," containing pieces originally written between 1787 and 1793. In these works the details of daily life are exaggerated, common plot devices are parodied, and the stories are full of anarchic fantasies of female power, illicit and general high spirits. The 3rd volume of juvenilia includes: Evelyn; Catharine. Volume the Third contains more ambitious work – a completed epistolary novel, Evelyn, and an unfinished novel, Catherine, or the Bower – and Reverend Austen wrote inside, “Effusions of Fancy by a very Young Lady Consisting of Tales in a Style entirely new.” “Entirely new” is right! As I argue in the article I’m writing, nothing similar emerged in literature for more than a hundred years, when writers became far more experimental in the 20th century.
