Juvenilia Volume I is a work by Jane Austen, an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Perhaps as early as 1787, Austen began to write poems, stories, and plays for her own and her family's amusement. Austen later compiled "fair copies" these early works into three bound notebooks, now referred to as the "Juvenilia," containing pieces originally written between 1787 and 1793. The 1st volume of juvenilia includes: Frederic & Elfrida; Jack & Alice; Edgar & Emma; Henry and Eliza; The Adventures of Mr. Harley; Sir William Mountague; Memoirs of Mr. Clifford; The Beautifull Cassandra; Amelia Webster; The Visit; The Mystery; The Three Sisters; Detached Pieces (A Fragment, A beautiful description, The generous Curate, Ode to Pity). Scraps (The Female Philosopher, The First Act of a Comedy, A Letter from a Young Lady, A Tour through Wales, A Tale). Personally, I find Volume the First the most interesting. It is in the worst repair, which is maybe why it wasn’t published earlier, or maybe it was just too different from her beloved novels for fans and academics to process. As Austen continued to pursue her writing, her father must have found that her productions warranted a better repository than their first, calfskin-bound home.
