Basil (1852) is the second novel written by British author Wilkie Collins, after Antonina. This classic novel is a domestic drama packed with enough twists and turns to satisfy even the most jaded reader. The story explains a young naive man of a noble family who falls in love at first sight with a poor but beautiful young lady. After falling head-over-heels in love with this mysterious young woman, Basil decides he must have her at all costs, despite the fact that the decision may bring ruin to his high-society family. After courting the girl and convincing her father to agree to a secret marriage, things begin to veer off-track, he is thoroughly shocked to discover her affair with Robert Mannion, her father's clerk. Since Basil discovers his spouse in the arms of another, his reaction has tragic and lasting consequences. Collins unveils the connections between Mannion and Basil's father and accounts for the venom of Mannion's revenge. Basil's father indirectly caused Mannion's father to be hanged for forgery.
