Antonina is an 1850 novel by Wilkie Collins. Ancient Rome, Young Antonia had the misfortune to live in interesting times when mighty Rome was brought low by the terror of the Goths in AD 408. The mountains forming the range of Alps which border on the north-eastern confines of Italy, were, in the autumn of the year 408, already furrowed in numerous directions by the tracks of the invading forces of those northern nations generally comprised under the appellation of Goths. Only two historical personages are introduced,— the Emperor Honorius, and Alaric the Goth. Among the historical incidents used are the arrival of the Goths at the gates of Rome, the Famine, the last efforts of the besieged, the Treaty of Peace, the introduction of the Dragon of Brass, and the collection of the ransom,— most of these accounts being founded on the chronicles of Zosimus. The novel is full of action, vivid in color, and sufficiently close to history.
